Hi! I’m Kayla Rebecca Reece (she/her)
I am a Pisces Sun, Leo Moon and Cancer Rising. I’m from Guyana, and I've been studying and reading Tarot for over 16 years. I created Totowosu Tarot in July 2018 to share tarot as a therapeutic storytelling tool with my communities. I believe that storytelling is both a divine and human right which activates our intuitions while building community knowledge & solidarity.
A note on the etymology (origin) of the word “totowosu”: The Wai Wai are one of the nine Indigenous peoples of Guyana. In their language the noun stem toto refers to a human being or person; wosu is the gendered word for female & is used as a suffix. Totowosu literally translates as female person, or in one word: woman. I acknowledge daily that I was born and live on stolen, unceded Indigenous lands, so I do not borrow the word totowosu lightly or in vein.
As a Caribbean woman and a child of the African diaspora my communities are BIPOC, intersectional & cross several borders. Within the last decade I’ve lived in New York, London, Paris, & Kingston, JA. Since migrations and re-migrations have been a big part of my life, I'm lucky to call a handful of places home, and I carry both the privileges and traumas of navigating those spaces as a Black woman.
I hold a BA in Communication Arts (St. Francis College, Brooklyn), a Post-Graduate Diploma in Gender Studies & Law (SOAS, University of London), and an M.A. Women’s & Gender Studies (The Graduate Center, CUNY.
As long-time student of yoga, I received a scholarship for BIPOC folx and gained my 200HR Yoga Teachers Training certification in 2020 from Y7 Studio (NY). Soon after which I completed advanced teacher training in 25HR prenatal yoga (with Amanda Gloria Valdes), making me proficient in creating and holding space for all prenatal & postnatal humans. In 2021 I completed training with Sumi’s Touch (Oakland, CA) as a full-spectrum doula, and I am eager to officially add birth work and doula support to my online offerings. Since then, I’ve added to my doula medicine bag by training as a breast and chest feeding peer councillor, and an abortion doula.
I do not perceive my role as a Tarot reader as separate and apart from my missions as a yoga teacher, doula, reproductive justice advocate, writer, witness, student, scholar or teacher. As a healer I seek to alchemise my interdisciplinary knowledge into all of my offerings.
I live and work at the intersection of gender & social justice, holistic wellness and the spiritual arts. I am dedicated to an intuitive, decolonial, anti-racist and transnational feminist framework and practice for myself, my communities and my business.
